In Kenya today, civic education training plays a critical role in shaping informed, responsible, and active citizens. Through community civic training programs, organizations are equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to actively participate in governance, promote accountability, and drive sustainable development. 

One organization at the forefront of this movement is Retizen Organization (CBO), which continues to implement impactful public participation training and citizen engagement training initiatives across communities. 

Youth for Accountability Project 2.0: Building Future Leaders

On 7th March 2026, Retizen Organization conducted a civic education workshop in Kenya at Kamobo Secondary School under its flagship program, Youth for Accountability Project 2.0. The training brought together 69 youth participants from Mosgaa, Kayodester, All Saints, and Dira Queens communities.  

This governance training workshop focused on empowering young people with knowledge on: 

The goal was clear: to strengthen youth capacity to actively contribute to decision-making and community development.

Impact of the Training: Strengthening Citizen Engagement

Despite a slightly lower turnout due to competing activities, the training achieved significant impact.

Challenges and Lessons Learned 

Like many NGO training programs in civic engagement, the session experienced a few challenges: 

However, adaptability from both facilitators and participants ensured the success of the training. This highlights the resilience often seen in grassroots community training on transparency and accountability.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many youths expressed appreciation for the opportunity and requested more civic training for youth groups in Kenya.
