Through community civic training programs, Retizen organization is equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to actively participate in governance, promote accountability, and drive sustainable development.

Youth for Accountability Project 2.0: Building Future Leaders

On 7th March 2026, Retizen Organization conducted a civic education workshop in Kenya at Kamobo Secondary School under its flagship program, Youth for Accountability Project 2.0. The training brought together 69 youth participants from Mosgaa, Kayodester, All Saints, and Dira Queens communities.  

This governance training workshop focused on empowering young people with knowledge on: 

• Leadership and governance  

• Social accountability  

• Environmental stewardship  

• Responsible citizenship  

The goal was clear: to strengthen youth capacity to actively contribute to decision-making and community development. 

Why Civic Awareness Programs in Kenya Matter 

Across the country, civic awareness programs in Kenya are becoming increasingly important in strengthening democracy and community participation. Many young people lack access to structured community empowerment training, making initiatives like this vital. 

During the training: 

• Participants engaged in interactive discussions on governance

Impact of the Training: Strengthening Citizen Engagement

Despite a slightly lower turnout due to competing activities, the training achieved significant impact.  

Key outcomes included: 

• Improved understanding of good governance and accountability  

• Increased awareness of public participation processes  

• Strong youth interest in leadership and governance training  

• High levels of engagement and discipline among participants  

The interactive format—including Q&A sessions—enabled deeper understanding and practical learning, making it an effective social accountability training model.

Challenges and Lessons Learned 

Like many NGO training programs in civic engagement, the session experienced a few challenges: 

• Lower attendance due to sports tournaments  

• Temporary power interruptions  

However, adaptability from both facilitators and participants ensured the success of the training. This highlights the resilience often seen in grassroots community training on transparency and accountability.

Voices from the Community 

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many youths expressed appreciation for the opportunity and requested more civic training for youth groups in Kenya.  

This demonstrates a growing demand for: 

• Governance and leadership workshops for youth  

• Ongoing community civic training programs  

• Expanded citizen engagement training initiatives
