Our Story

The name Retizen comes from “Responsible Citizen,” reflecting our core belief that every individual has the power to create positive change in their community.

Retizen emerged as a youth-led movement with a bold vision: to transform Kenya’s future by promoting civic engagement, social responsibility, and sustainable development.

Founded with a deep commitment to empowering young people and women, particularly in rural areas, we create pathways for individuals to become informed leaders and agents of transformative change.

Our 2024โ€“2028 vision focuses on expanding our impact, fostering a generation of socially conscious and economically empowered individuals who will shape Kenya’s tomorrow.

Caleb Kendagor

Caleb Kendagor

Board Chair

Caleb Kandagor is an innovative doctoral fellow and researcher with over 12 years of experience in academia, specializing in Business Ethics, Leadership, Governance, and Higher Education. He has worked extensively as a trainer and consultant for various corporate organizations, focusing on ethics and leadership development. Caleb is passionate about mentoring young people and engaging in community and social projects. Known for his well-organized and thoughtful approach, he values making meaningful contributions and prefers quiet recognition. With a balanced mix of accountability, organization, and empathy, Caleb is deeply committed to his work, often taking a supportive, human-centered leadership role. His 13 years of experience span project management, academia, research, and consultancy, including working in remote areas and with diverse cultures

Betty is a dedicated Risk & Compliance Management professional with over eight years of experience in risk management, quality assurance, coaching, training, program management, and project management. Throughout her career, she has played a pivotal role in designing and implementing risk and compliance management strategies that drive program success across multiple departments. With a strong academic background in sociology and counselling psychology, Betty is deeply passionate about life coaching, mentorship, and promoting holistic growth. Her commitment extends to fostering social impact in communities and advancing economic mobility, ensuring that both individuals and societies thrive. Betty holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology.

Scholastica Mwau

Scholastica Mwau-Kuligha

Board Member

Mrs. Scholastica Mwau-Kuligha is a Finance, Internal and Forensic Audit, Risk and Compliance Expert and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) registered with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) (www.icpak.com). She is a member of ICPAK in good standing & a Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors. She is also a certified Board Member. With his vast working experience spanning 19 years, in internal audit, finance, forensic accounts, Risk & Compliance, quality assurance, strategy, and governance. Over 3 years in International roles within the Great Lakes Region serving twelve Member States in Africa. She had an opportunity to serve the board as a trustee in the pension fund of the one of leading private Universities in Africa. Scholastica also has experience working in some of the post-conflict regions & countries, such as the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan among others.

With over 9 years of experience in using data, research, and knowledge to drive socio-economic impact, Gladys holds an M.Sc. in Social Statistics from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor’s in Business Information Technology from Strathmore University. Her expertise lies in statistical analysis and vulnerability assessments across various sectors, with a focus on WASH, policy, and governance. Currently, she is involved in the ONEPlanET project, developing a Water-Energy-Food nexus framework for sustainable development in Africa. Her previous roles include consulting for USAID’s KIM initiative at Strathmore Business School, working with ASSEK, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and providing strategic support to county governments in Kenya. Additionally, she mentors young girls through Strathmore University’s Macheo Program and serves on the board of The Village Movement, an organization supporting vulnerable children.

Judy Tuwei

Executive Director

Judy Tuwei is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with over 9 years of experience implementing skills development programs for youth in the western and coastal regions of Kenya, and 5 years’ experience leading participatory monitoring initiatives. She holds a Bachelor of Business IT and a M.A. in Monitoring and Evaluation. Judy’s expertise spans Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL), program design, and capacity building. Her approach ensures participants not only understand key concepts but also apply them through action-oriented plans and sustained mentorship.

Salim Abdallah has been a coach and mentor for various football clubs for over six years. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies. In addition to his studies, he supports and counsels youth through the Kamobo Football Association, using sports as a platform for mentorship and positive community engagement.

Wendy Anyango is a Financial Economist with a strong foundation in economic analysis, forecasting, and financial management. She is committed to leveraging innovative approaches to address the dynamic challenges of the economy. Beyond her academic pursuits, she is passionate about giving back to her community. She has been actively involved in mental health advocacy, supporting children’s homes, and promoting environmental conservation. These experiences have deepened her understanding of social issues and reinforced her belief in the power of community engagement. She is honored to join Retizen because she gets to create a positive impact as she learns and grows. She is also an avid reader and a chess enthusiast.

Grants Officer

Beatrice Cherotich is a dedicated Grants Associate with over five years of experience in managing grant portfolios, budgeting, and compliance. Equipped with an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Nairobi, along with CPA Level 3 certification, she has developed a strong expertise in navigating donor requirements and financial reporting. Beatrice’s skill set includes grant fundraising, cost proposal development, budget analysis, and strategic planning. She is proficient in managing complex grant systems and leveraging tools like Microsoft 365, Salesforce, and advanced Excel for financial modeling and quality assurance. Known for her collaborative approach, she engages effectively with stakeholders and provides mentorship in grant management best practices. Beatrice’s commitment to excellence and her strategic mindset contribute to meaningful project outcomes and organizational growth.
